Reformer

The reformer is the heart of the studio — a spring-loaded carriage that builds full-body strength, control and length. Resistance is smooth and adjustable, so the same machine challenges a first-timer and an athlete alike.

What you'll gain

Full-body strength without impact

The spring-loaded carriage lets you build real strength without pounding your joints. Resistance is smooth and continuous, so muscles work hard through a full range with nothing jarring.

In a single class you'll work:

  • Deep core and pelvic floor
  • Back and posture muscles
  • Arms, shoulders and chest
  • Legs, hips and glutes
  • Balance and coordination

Because the load is fully adjustable, the work stays challenging but never punishing — session after session.

Better posture and core control

Every exercise begins from a strong, stable centre, so you leave standing taller and moving with more control.

The reformer trains, among other things:

  • Deep abdominal control
  • Spinal alignment
  • Shoulder stability
  • Hip mobility
  • Even left-right balance
  • Breath and rib control
  • Everyday posture

Small, precise corrections from your instructor mean the right muscles do the work — the foundation of lasting posture change.

Most clients notice the difference in how they sit, stand and move within a few weeks.

Longer, leaner muscles

Reformer work lengthens as it strengthens, building tone without bulk through slow, controlled, full-range movement.

Expect work that:

  • Lengthens tight muscles
  • Builds long, lean strength
  • Opens the hips and spine
  • Improves flexibility
  • Eases stiffness
  • Restores range of motion

Because the carriage supports you, you can move further and more safely than on the mat alone.

The result is a body that feels both stronger and more supple.

Scalable resistance for any level

The same machine meets a first-timer and an athlete alike. Springs are added or removed in seconds, so resistance scales exactly to you.

Your instructor adjusts the load and the exercise for your level and any injuries, so every class is challenging, safe and entirely yours.

How a class works

The reformer

The reformer is a sliding carriage set on rails, connected to a set of adjustable springs.

You work lying, sitting, kneeling or standing on it, pushing and pulling the carriage against the springs to build strength, control and length through the whole body.

The question every exercise asks is simple: can you move slowly, precisely and with control?

That focus on quality over quantity is what makes reformer work so effective — and so calming.

Springs and resistance

Unlike free weights, the springs give resistance in both directions — as you push away and as you return.

How hard an exercise feels depends less on the number of springs than on:

  • Your control of the carriage
  • The range you move through
  • Your tempo and breath
  • Your alignment
  • The exercise itself

Your instructor sets the spring load for each exercise and for you, so the work is always appropriate.

The aim is not to lift the most, but to move the best.

In a class

What to expect

Classes run for 50 minutes with no more than six people, so your instructor sees every repetition.

After a short warm-up you'll move through a full-body sequence — footwork, core, arms, legs and back — flowing from one exercise to the next.

A typical class includes:

  • Footwork and leg springs
  • Core and abdominal work
  • Arm and shoulder series
  • Stretch and mobility

to finish.

Grippy socks and water

Wear comfortable, fitted clothing and bring grippy socks — they keep you secure on the carriage. We provide everything else.

Arriving a little early lets you:

  • Meet your instructor
  • Flag any injuries
  • Get set up on the machine
  • Settle and breathe

Tell us it's your first time and we'll guide you through every step.

Small groups

Never more than six

We cap every class at six people, so teaching stays personal and your form is always watched.

Your instructor moves around the room, correcting alignment, adjusting springs and tailoring exercises to each body in front of them.

The focus is not on getting through as many reps as possible, but on moving well — so progress is real and injuries stay away.

It's the closest thing to a private session at a fraction of the cost.

Progress you can feel

Because you're seen every class, you progress faster and more safely than in a crowded room.

As you get stronger, your instructor adds load, range and complexity, so the reformer keeps challenging you for years.

Most clients come twice a week and pair the reformer with mat or apparatus classes.

The reformer, explained

The reformer is the machine Joseph Pilates is most famous for, and it remains the heart of a full Pilates studio. More than a century on, it is still one of the most effective tools for building strength, control and length in the whole body.

At its core is a simple idea: resistance you can control. The springs support you where you need it and challenge you where you're ready, so the same exercise can be gentle rehabilitation or serious strength work.

Every body is different, with its own strengths, tight spots and history. The reformer adapts to all of them — which is why beginners, athletes, new mothers and people recovering from injury can all train on the same machine.

Our classes treat you as a whole. Rather than chasing a single muscle, we build strength, mobility, breath and control together, so the way you move in class carries into daily life.

A few things make reformer work so effective:

Controlled resistance Springs load the muscle through the whole movement, both as you push and as you return, building even, controlled strength.

Full-body training Footwork, core, arms, legs and back in one flowing sequence, so nothing is neglected.

Low impact, high effect Smooth resistance means intense work with almost no jarring — kind to joints, tough on muscles.

Better posture Everything starts from a strong centre, so you stand taller and move with more ease over time.

Truly personal With no more than six people to a class, your instructor sees every repetition and tailors the work to you.
